Most elderly people in northern Nigeria still remember what General Danjuma did to save the northern traditional establishment from extinction and how he coordinated the recovery and safe return of the corpses of late Sir Ahmadu Bello and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa in 1966.It was also General Danjuma who stood up to arrest and ensure that those who assassinated General Murtala Mohammed were punished. It is good to note that none of these folks that General Danjuma risked his life to protect and avenged is a Christian or of the Jukun ethnic stock.

General Danjuma is a spectacular individual who always stands for what he believes in regardless of what others feel or think. A cardinal principle or philosophy of his life is justice and fairness although he tends to sympathize with the oppressed and the down trodden regardless of whether the downtrodden is right or wrong. This is because General Danjuma has one of the rarest qualities to be found in Nigeria: empathy. His ability to feel the pain of the down trodden is the reason why he always stands up to speak for the rights of the downtrodden or the victimized.
One of the major misconceptions that is gradually gaining momentum in Nigeria today is that General Danjuma is a religious bigot, a Christian fundamentalist and a champion of ethnic supremacy. This might be because of his open criticism of the Buhari administration in recent times. The truth of the matter is that General Danjuma is not and has never been a religious bigot, Christian fundamentalist or a champion of ethnic supremacy in Nigeria or anywhere in this world. For starters, General Danjuma’s effort towards building a northern Nigeria that he fully knows has a Muslim majority is legendary. Right from the beginning of the first republic, General Danjuma’s contributions in helping to build a stronger Nigeria vis-à-vis a stronger northern Nigeria has been widely acknowledges by all and sundry. If there is any Nigerian that firmly believes in the unity and viability of northern Nigeria and Nigeria as a whole, it is General Danjuma. Here again, many scholars and analysts say that they have observed that General Danjuma’s patriotism is not because of any selfish interest or personal benefit otherwise he could have manipulated his way to become Head of State after the assassination of General Mohammed in 1975.
Again the contributions and support of General Danjuma towards the presidential aspirations of President Muhammadu Bahari since 2003 cannot be compared to that of any Nigerian living or dead. General Danjuma supported President Buhari even though General Buhari is a Fulani and a Muslim. In fact reliable sources close to both General Danjuma and President Buhari said General Danjuma played significant roles in the victory of President Buhari in 2015.People like Abba Kyari,President Buhari’s Chief of Staff still remember how they spent sleepless nights of planning and strategizing at the of General Danjuma with the likes of Dr. Obadiah Ando and others in Wuse 2,Abuja. He donated handsomely to the campaign and made available a lot of contacts across the divides of the nation to rally round President Buhari. Needless to say that he did all that knowing that he was supporting a Muslim candidate against a fellow Christian. General Danjuma was able to use the 2015 presidential election to show Nigerians that he is not a religious bigot or a Christian fundamentalist when he provided support to President Buhari. An investigation carried out by the Northeast Star magazine revealed that General Danjuma still regards President Buhari in high esteem but he is not comfortable with the handlers of the President. The investigation revealed that General Danjuma is of the opinion that some people had hijacked the Buhari presidency and are now piloting the affairs of the country. “The Buhari we know is not the Buhari we are seeing today. I remember how as GOC in Jos, General Buhari chased away armed bandits away from Borno until he cross into foreign soil. The Buhari I know is passionate about national security, equity and fairness,” said a close associate of General Danjuma.
General Danjuma symbolizes what a typical Nigerian ought to be. His patriotism and believe in the Nigerian project are worthy of emulation for all Nigerians. However some eminent Nigerians are of the opinion that recent comments coming from the General buttressed him as a national catastrophe. They reckoned that his comments on the Army was unpatriotic and fell short of nearly instigating a national insurrection against the Army. Again the General made this comment because of his frustration with the issue of rampant insecurity and destruction of lives and property by alleged Fulani herdsmen in and around the country and the failure or inability of government to bring the culprits to book.
It will however be wrong to say that General Danjuma is a perfect Nigerian whose opinion and utterances on national issues has always been right all the time. This is because despite the fact that the General is a well informed retired Army General with age, experience and wide contacts at his side, he is still finite and a mere mortal. Nevertheless, the General will go down in history as a man who is sincere and forthright because he was never a coward or a hypocrite. He has always made his opinion known on issues concerning his fatherland and as an elder statesman, General Danjuma has never been afraid of taking a position and showing it publicly for all to see.
This independence and courage to stand up for what he believes to be right is why President Buhari holds General Danjuma in high esteem and regardless of what the President’s handlers said against General Danjuma, the President will always accord him that respect.A reliable source close to the President said that he witnesses how one of the associates of incurred the President’s wrath when he spoke ill of General Danjuma in the Villa. “Don’t ever speak ill of this man near me again. I don’t want to hear it,” said President Buhari to aide.
The truth of the matter of the matter is that Nigeria’s Presidents will always require the support and input of people like General Danjuma to stabilize the polity and make the country prosperous. Anyone President who ignores him is doing so to his own detriment.
