SWAN NORTHEAST VP CHARGES TARABA GOVT. ON SPORTS DEVELOPMENT

The National Vice President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN, Northeast zone Alhaji Sadiq Moyoyo has urged Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba state to partner with the Association in reviving sporting activities to save it from derailing in the state.
He made the plea in Jalingo while speaking at the 55th anniversary of the Association organized by the state chapter of SWAN, held at the NUJ Secretariat on Friday.
Moyoyo expressed concerned over the nonchalant attitude of the state government towards sports and appealed to the state to give priority to the sector.
While enumerating some of the achievements recorded so far by the association at the National level, the Northeast Vice President explained that a lot has been achieved under the leadership of the SWAN National President Comrade Honour Sirawoo.
Among the achievements he highlighted including acquiring a temporary Secretariat in Abuja, a piece of land courtesy of FCT Minister and capacity building of sports Journalists as well as employment of staff among others.
In a remark, NUJ Chairman, Taraba state council Comrade Jovita Shafe described SWAN as a vibrant organ of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, saying that the association at fifty five years as champion various causes of the practice of Journalism and has given fair representation to the to the practice of Journalism in various face of human endeavor.
He said today, sports has become a global commodity of trade, a political weapon and an integrating factor as well that add value to every developed nation.
The NUJ Chairman also believed that SWAN because of the places of sports, represents a very key important position in the entire gamut of the Journalism, adding that without SWAN, most sporting activities will face lots of challenges as the public will be less informed about the happenings of sports around the world.
Comrade Jovita Shafe while commending the Northeast Vice President who hail from Taraba state for his comments towards the development of sports and the Association as well, also urged other Journalists that are practicing in the state to enroll in the association so as to save sports from derailing in the state.
Earlier in an address, Chairman Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN, Taraba state chapter Comrade Kabiru Usman Jalingo appealed to the Federal Government to revisit the Ultra- training Camp project in Gembu, Sardauna local government area of the state, saying that by doing so, it will help in reducing the cost spent by the Federal government in training Nigeria’s athletes abroad.
He also called on Taraba state government to re-invigorate sporting activities as well as re-introduce inter-locsl government competition in the state, noting that the state is not as vibrant as other states of the federation in terms of sports.
Comrade Kabiru Usman Jalingo however, while commending sports writers in the state for their commitments.
