Dabkana: A concise profile of the best orthopedic physician in the northeast
Dr. Dabkana was awarded with the General Excellence Award in Orthopedics in Nigeria because of his expertise, compassion and courage to stay back in Maiduguri to serve the people of the northeast with his specialized kind of skill. Of the five superior orthopedic surgeons available in Borno before the emergence of Boko Haram terrorists group, Dr. Dabkana is the only one who stayed behind to cater for the needs of the wounded security personnel, innocent civilians who became victims of gun shots or accidents. His passion for excellence and diligence in the discharge of his duty is legendary.
Dr. Theophilus Maksha Dabkana was born to the family of Mr. &Mrs. Dabkana, both of the Nzanyi tribe, on July 4th1964, at Ma’ane, in Vakuna/Pakka District of Maiha Local Government Area of Adamawa state. He grew up close to his Grandfather Kwanta Bonzu who initially did not want him to go to school but something happened in September 1970 just before his death. The old man sent for his grandson while on his sick bed and said, “You can now go to the Whiteman to learn how to read and write but know this: no fellow pupil will surpass you.” Not long afterwards he died on 4th January,1971.
Dr. Dabkana was enrolled into primary I at Pakka Primary School. He being born into a pagan family converted into Christianity in 1977. He was the youngest pupil in the class but stayed on top of the class for the next seven years until he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1978. He proceeded to Federal Government College Enugu the same year where he spent the next five years and obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate. He passed out with flying colors.
He loved the sciences and after sitting for JAMB in 1983, gained admission to read Medicine at the College of Medical Sciences University of Jos. He graduated in 1989, did his internship at Yola Specialist Hospital in the then Gongola State. He proceeded for his NYSC in old Anambra State and served at Joint Hospital Ozubulu Nnewi Local Government area, present Anambra State. After his NYSC, he took up appointment with the Hospital and worked for one year. He developed interest in Orthopedic Surgery after working with a visiting Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. U. N. Enweani and proceeded to National Orthopedic Hospital Enugu in 1993 and after six years of study, obtained his Post Graduate medical degree in Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery from the West African College of Surgeons in 2001 after moving to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in 2000.
He was appointed HOD Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery UMTH in 2001, a post he held for ten years. He is presently an Associate Professor of Orthopedics in the College of Medicine, University of Maiduguri where he was also the first HOD (acting) (2009-2010), and appointed HOD in 2014 a post he still holds. He has published scholarly papers in local and international journals, one article in particular attracting a German Publisher. It is important to make it clear that Dr. Dabkana was considered for the award of General Excellence in Orthopedics because out of five Orthopedic Surgeons from 2013 till date, he was the only one that stayed back in Maiduguri (his colleagues left because of the Boko Haram insurgency).
Currently an Associate Professor of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery, Senate member University of Maiduguri and HOD, Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medical Sciences, University of Maiduguri.
