HOW NIGERIA UNDERDEVELOPED AFRICA
Japhil Yila Esq
You know I’m not very happy with Nigeria. I’ve made that very clear on many occasions. Yes, Nigeria stood by us more than any nation, but you let yourselves down, and Africa and the black race very badly. Your leaders have no respect for their people. They believed that their personal interests are the interest of the people. They take people’s resources and turn it into personal wealth. There is a level of poverty in Nigeria that should be unacceptable. I cannot understand why Nigerians are not angrier than they are.
What do young Nigerians think about your leaders and their country and Africa?
Do you teach them history?
Do you have lessons on how your past leaders stood by us and gave us large amount of money?
You know I heard from Angola, Mozambicans and Zimbabweans how your people opened their hearts and homes to them.
“———- let me tell you what I think you need to do; you should encourage leaders to emerge who will not confuse public office with sources of making personal wealth. Corrupt people do not make good leaders—–” -Nelson Mandela 2007
In the beginning there was a verse from the Holy Bible;
“For unto everyone that hath shall be given, and he shall have in abundance. But from him that hath not shall be taken even that which he hath” Mathew XXV v. 29. NIV
The white men were quick to wrongly conclude that the above verse was a gift from heaven to them. Armed with that, they invaded Africa- raped her, exploited everything living and non-living and shipped them to Europe and the U. S.
Such excavation of Africa left the continent dry as Europe and U. S began the climb to solid development.
It should be noted that before that, originally most Europeans and the U.S are naturally poor. Firstly, they started by exploiting African resources and secondly, they are currently blindfolding some African thieves who usually steal monies meant to developed the continent but rather ship them to the white men for further development of their countries. Thereby making their countries immensely developed while Africa remained stagnant.
Meanwhile, after exploiting everything worth exploiting in Africa, the colonialists left the continent in the 60’s after much pressure. Shortly after that in 1964, the United Nations survey of Economic condition in Africa observed that:
“Africa is well endowed with mineral and primary energy resources with an estimated 9 percent of the world’s population.
The region account for approximately 28 percent of the total value of world mineral production and 6 percent of its crude petroleum output”
God must have truly blessed Africa, if after years of milking the continent by the whites, then it’s a great miracle that such amount of wealth can still be found over 50 years ago.
And more surprisingly is that, it became evident that such wealth is shown to be discovered and in the increase everyday!
Development can be said to mean the process of developing, growth directed to change, but in this context, the meaning goes beyond and touches on increased in skills capacity, freedom, creativity, advancement in science and technology, self discipline and responsibility especially with public funds, and finally material utilization to the benefits of the populace and well-being.
The above definition is what is obtainable in the Europe and U.S and more recently in India and China.
But sadly enough, the opposite is what beclouded the fate of Nigeria and as a result of the evil activities of some few evil men in this country, the repercussion is the complete underdevelopment of the entire continent.
Therefore, as touched earlier, between 1870s to the 1900’s Africa faced European imperialist aggression, and pressures which eventually led to the conquest and colonization of the continent. The period saw the forceful and drilling of all African raw materials for the development of the white man’s country.
As if that was not enough, they captured and forced able men out of Africa who in turn were used to build their economy between the 15th to the 19th centuries.
These two natural asserts help in no small way in developing the Europe and others and contributed in a bigger way in under developing the Africa continent.
Few years after achieving their aim and shortly after leaving Africans to control their victimized continent, another form of colonization ushered it ugly face; Neocolonialism! Where the white’s i.e. colonial masters will not participate in robbing Africa physically, but would instigate some Africa elites to rob the continent and forward the proceeds to the whites for “safe keeping”.
These few elites occupied juicy seats in the government and directly controlled public funds. Funds meant for the development of Africa instead are laundered to foreign lands.
For as long as one can remember Nigeria holds the prestigious record in the world of harboring officials and immune government thieves who have contributed greatly by sucking the country dry and assisted majorly in making Europe and the U.S what they are today and more recently India, Germany and China. For the country’s resources which is supposed to be used to improve the standard of living, increase par capital income, reduce poverty rate, reduce unemployment rate, build critical infrastructures and generally improve the quality of life of her citizens is not being done for these purposes and Nigerians are left worse off amidst massive resources.
I believe the only way to fight these leaders, is to call them by their appropriate name: THIEVES! Using anything short of this would only mitigate the expected aim. When the words like “corrupt officials” “money launder” and the likes are used, the average Nigerian will not understand the implication of such evil act.
Although, mostly the law is usually too weak to catch them, they finally go scot free and their subsequent successors carry over the act and so forth! Before long one discovers that the bulk wealth of the black continent has found its way developing other continents.
From the late 70s till date, Nigeria has immeasurably contributed in developing the Europe that today, the Europeans need no African country for anything for what they get from Nigeria is enough.
Nigeria had thereby succeeded in under developing the African continent for monies stolen from Nigeria coffers had found its way in Europe and the US etc wherein their economy wax stronger, their defense solid, their health sectors remarkable.
Take for instance, German and in recent era India; Nigeria had contributed wonderfully in establishing their health sectors. The annual income, more particularly to India from Nigeria medical trips had helped the country under Modi to achieve 85% Adults who have bank account against 45% in 4 years ago.
Furthermore, all known villages electrified with Foreign Direct Investment of $61.94 Billion.
If not, why not! Since funds meant for establishing standard health sectors in Nigeria have been stolen and infused into the white man’s economy, Nigerians had no choice but to fly therein for medical remedies.
Shamelessly enough, Nigeria has all it takes to developed African countries via granting loans and execution of social infrastructures and provision of humanitarian services. Thus, aiding African nations to close their eyes to foreign aid.
But Nigeria has killed it all—–!!
Now imagine! What could be more damaging and thoughtless than Africa leaders scuffling over china’s loan of 6o Billion dollars, especially the leadership of Nigeria?!
Obviously, we are cursed! Where did we actually go wrong?
When an elephant move, the grasses bow; when the giant of Africa scuffled for loan from china, what becomes tiny Rwanda, Kenya and the rest than to follow suit?
Analytically speaking, could it be that Nigerian leaders are surreptitiously selling the future of Africa? Because on a closer look, China is becoming a threat to Africa and other poor neighboring countries around.
Take for example, what happened in Sri-Lanka; China gave them loans years back to build the Hambantota port- with a clause that the grantee would pay up. Failing to pay up the loan facility as agreed, Sri- Lanka government was forced to lease the port to the grantor China for 99 years.
Djibouti, Zambia and Kenya are suffering similar fate. Could it be that other African leaders especially Nigeria did not notice the risk involved in this loan deal or merely deliberately close its eyes to the reality?
Checkout NEPAL and Pakistan who rejected Chinese loan offered to them. Why can’t our leaders see beyond today?
Well, perhaps Nigeria can withstand the threat from China in case of default in re-paying of the loan, but what about the Tiny Rwanda, Kenya and company? These countries can easily be dominated by Chinese attacked as done in Sri-Lanka. How does Nigeria help these tiny countries?
As the result of the massive looting of funds meant to develop Nigeria as well as helping in developing other African continent, it was observed that from 1996 to 2004, 67.1 Million Nigerians were living in poverty line, 2004 to 2010 the figure doubled to 112 Million (WORLD BANK ANALYSIS).
According to Global news, October 17, 2018 that as of June 2018 to date, the country has the largest extreme poverty population of 86.9 Million, followed by India, 71.5 Million and DRC 60.9 Million.
What is astonishing about the poverty situation in Nigeria is that it has persisted even when the nation earned its highest revenues.
As the late Mandela rightly puts it, leaders should be encouraged not to confuse public office as sources of making personal wealth.
For that black and shortsighted mentality had caused our leaders beginning from the 70th to date to steal billions of naira to foreign lands leaving Nigeria and Africa to starve while the stolen monies kept these foreign countries a glow.
Host of other African countries who from the start look upon Nigeria as a role model now indulges and endorsed the stealing practice of siphoning funds meant to develop Africa to foreign countries. Strict measures should be taken to curtail further stealing funds meant to develop Nigeria and the black continent and stiff punitive measures laid down for thieves! These I believed will restore our glory.
