23 years old rapist sentenced to 14 years in Borno

lsarima Hassan an IDP in Monguno LGA of Borno State has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for raping a minor.  The nine years old survivor also an IDP in Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Monguno lDP camp was raped sometime in October.

The survivor was given medical attention in Monguno and later transferred to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre SARC (N3lewa Centre) in Maiduguri.  The Centre in Umaru Shehu Ultra-Modern Hospital provides free medial and psycho social support to survivor and also provides free legal services to ensure prosecution of offenders.

The survivor was represented by State counsels and International Federation of Women Lawyers FIDA in Maiduguri. FIDA is also a member of the SARC Steering Committee of the N3lewa Centre. The judgment was passed in Maiduguri High court within a month.

The case was reported at a police station in Monguno before been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. After medical examination and forensic evidence were gathered along with witnesses, the rapist was charged to court through the office of the Attorney General of the State.

“It must not be allowed to go, as without judgment there is no sense” said Hajiya Zara the State Team Lead British Council Managing Conflict in Northeast (MCN) programme. She also commended the Judge and lawyers that represented the survivors to ensure justice prevailed.

The Programme Officer of the British Council Managing Conflict in Northeast (MCN) programme Mr. Emmanuel Iyaji said the judgment is a big win for the state, he encourages members of the public to always come forward to report cases as their identity and dignity will be protected and ensure they get justice. He also said member can report to the nearest police stations, National Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC) Offices or contact the N3lewa Centre for immediate medical assistance and to gather forensic evidence that will aid prosecution.
