Borno 2019: Who does the cap fits

Borno is trying to come out of the 9 year insurgency it found itself because of the adventures and misadventures of Senator Ali Sheriff and so the state needs someone who can manage a post insurgency situation. It needs someone who has a blue print on how to create new businesses and opportunities for people, share resources equitably and promote justice in the state. This is why the APC must allow the best person who the caps fits to wear it.

ABUBAKAR M.S (Maiduguri)
In Nigeria of today where political office is synonymous with instant monumental wealth and immeasurable power to do and undo, many people will naturally show interest to become the Chief Executives of their states. While political offices like the House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senatorial seats are also attractive, the most attractive one is that of the State Governor where an individual not only has unfettered access to the public treasury but also enjoys immunity from prosecution and can reign like a demi god.

At the moment Senators Kyari and Garbai,Hon. Zaufanjinba,Hon. Bukar Dalori, Dr. Abba Aji , Dr.Umar Alkali Nasco,Habu SB Sakwa, Grema Terab (PDP) and Mohammed Imam(PDP) are all scheming and planning to govern Borno in 2019.While it is certain that the PDP might find it easy to produce a flag bearer, the same cannot be said about the APC where each an everyone of these local gladiators has a considerable followership.

One State in the northeast region of Nigeria that has taken politics to be a full time job is Borno and this has made politics in the state to be highly monetized to the extent that it is no longer possible to vie for any political office if one does not have plenty money in his or her coffers to share around. Elder statesmen, scholars and religious pontiffs have their prices. This is the genesis of the problem that is negatively affecting the progress of the state. It started when Sen. Ali Sheriff decided to challenge the elderly and conservative Mala Kachalla and contested for the governorship of Borno state in 2003.Sen. Sheriff alias SAS monetized politics in Borno and introduced hitherto unproductive youths who don’t know how to earn money to the world of easy money and gangsterism. He empowered them with money and motor bikes and encouraged them to intimidate the supporters of the then incumbent Governor (Late Kachalla).Late Kachalla who was a conservative from the old school refused the confrontational approach because he doesn’t subscribe to the idea of violence in politics. He conceded defeat even though the powers that be at that time told him to do otherwise. Immediately Sen. Sheriff took over the helm of affairs, he made sure that all the societal values and traditions of the State where discarded, thus the introduction of political thugs, monetized politicking, bloodletting through his militia known as ECOMOG and intimidation of the ordinary man.

Senator Ali Modu Sheriff

It can be recalled that Borno state witnessed gang like executions of gubernatorial candidates in 2011.These executions were attributed to be the reckless works of the dreaded Boko Haram sect but a vocal minority in Borno is of the opinion that these brutal assassinations were politically motivated because some certain cabal felt that both Awana Ngala and Engineer Modu F. Gambo were not who they wanted to rule Borno state. It was in the midst of all these that Kashim Shettima emerged as flag bearer of the then ANPP in the state which eventually won the governorship election.

Senator Garbai is rumored by many people as a protege of Gov. Shettima and the Senator is desperate to become governor in 2019.

As they say, a journey of a thousand mile starts with a step. It is now eight years that Kashim Shettima has been governing Borno state as Governor and the time has come for him to put his party, the APC in order and select or elect a successor who will become the flag bearer of the APC to contest the next gubernatorial election. Most people don’t give a damn about the PDP or the opposition in Borno because Borno is like a one party state where political pundits say that the APC still stands the chance of winning all elections. President Muhammadu Buhari still has a cult followership in the state but that notwithstanding they can vote for the APC at the state level and vote for another candidate at the Federal level just like they did in 2003 and 2007.

The PDP in Borno is relying on Atiku Abubakar to revive it and strengthen to challenge the PDP.

Senator Abu Kyari wants to be governor but Gov. Shettima will not like to handover to someone like him because he is too independent

According to a renowned Borno politician who doesn’t want his name to be mentioned here, the APC will produce the next governor of Borno state. “I can assure you that the APC is going to produce the next Governor of Borno state even though we still don’t have a credible flag bearer for the party,” said the APC Chieftain.
One major lapses of Governor Shettima was his inability to identify and groom a successor among the plethora of young Turks he was able to produce. It is on record that Gov. Shettima brought in new faces to government; some of them are Professor Umara Zulum,Engineer  Usman Chiroma,Dr. Mohammed Bulama, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan,Honorable  Adamu Lawan Zaufanjinba and a host of others. People like Senators Abubakar Kyari,Baba Kaka BSHIR Garbai And Ali Ndume were all identified and brought to lime light by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, the former Governor of Borno state. It is a fact that Governor Shettima failed to identify any of these people to take over after him and now that the new APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomole has made it clear that all APC controlled stats must conduct direct primaries, harnessing the interests of these political gladiators may not be easy.

Prof. Umara Zullum, the Commissioner of RRR is seen by many as a credible choice because of his transparency and positive efforts in rehabilitating IDPs. The RRR ministry has given him the opportunity to connect with the local people.

Sen. For example it will not be easy to convince Sen. Kyari and Garbai or Hon. Zaufanjinba to step down for another candidate.

Hon. Adamu Lawan is one of the young Turks and close confidante of Gov. Shettima who some say is favored by the Capitalists.

The emergence of personalities like Dr. Nasco and Sakwa may also change the tide because both of them, especially Mr. Nasco have penetrated the grassroots with their candidacy. Another critical factor that is often overlooked by the people of Borno state is that marabouts and charlatans now decide who becomes who in Borno state instead of Allah (SWT) Who alone can give power to whomsoever He wishes. These marabouts and charlatans have became so influential that they have made those in authority to shut their ears to common sense and reasoning.According to Musa Dilli, “Marabouts and charlatans may end up deciding who becomes the Borno APC flag bearer and not the APC members as Oshiomole wants. If we are trully practicing democracy, we shall allow the people to decide.Anything short of this will lead to chaos because we will not allow anybody,I repeat anybody to impose a candidate on us.This party belongs to all of us who are members.”

Dr. Nasco,a retired Customs officer is a distant relative of Gov. Shettima who according to some poeple has the support of both the Governor and Sen. Sheriff.

A resident of Bama known as Babagana Aji said that the APC could have presented a candidate to Governor Shettima instead of waiting for so long. “What is stopping them from doing so? See, they could have presented someone like Dr. M.K Dikwa or Mr. Nasco or Prof. Zullum instead of staying quiet and behaving as if the governor owns the party. Now we don’t have a candidate. I heard that they are planning to anoint Sen. Garbai who is very unpopular and lacks good social skills…We shall see,” he said.

Grema Terab of the PDP is favored by Atiku Abubakar but Mohammed Imam may likely defeat him in the PDP primaries

According to a close source who confided to this medium, even the APC State Chairman is scheming and maneuvering to emerge as the APC flag bearer of the APC in Borno state. The high level corruption and embezzlement of public funds, IDP relief items and wanton plunder of donations made to the state by international donors has to stop, and this can only happen if Borno elects a good governor in 2019.This is why the APC must allow the best person who the caps fits to wear it.
