Ruby Director’s Cup Final 2018: SS1 Girls stunned SS2 Girls as SS2 Boys Humbled JSS3

The keenly contested 2017/2018 Director’s Cup for Ruby Springfield College Maiduguri ended on Friday 9th March 2018. The highly anticipated and celebrated grand finale kicked off at exactly 8:30 am with staff and students from various classes sitting in front of the school’s blocks to cheer the players up.
The female team of the SS2 and SS1 who progressed to the final in the penultimate week, locked horns first, with the SSI girls winning the girls’ competition by a lone goal from Aisha Audu Ville, almost at the stoppage time.
Shortly after the clash, the final match between SS2 boys and JSS3 boys followed, with the scoreline 6-2. At the first few minutes of the game, the SS2 boys were stunned with an awesome strike by the JSS3 player which ended at the back of the net. However, a strike ,few minutes after from the SS2 superstar, Joshua Markus Malgwi cast in the mould of the Argentine football idol, Lionel Messi levelled the hitherto 1-0 lead.
After the match, one of the teachers, Mr Donald Gargba told Northeast Star that the defeat of the dreaded SS2 girls was nothing short of being highly tactical through the formation approached by the SS1 coach, Mr Chukwudiebere Michael ( Mr Chucks). Continuing, he noted that the SS2 best player, Halima Zannah Mustapha, who would have caused a lot of trouble to SS1 was man- marked and that sealed the game.
Reacting, the SS1 coach, Mr Chucks, gave kudos to the girls for their performance, noting that coming up against the dreaded SS2 girls players wasn’t an easy task. He expressed satisfaction that his players gave their best which ensured their victory.
On his own, Mr Benjamin Fabian, the SS2 coach expressed happiness for his female team’s doggedness but however expressed regret that one moment of brilliance from the SS1 striker ended the game.
Commenting on his male team performance, Mr Benjamin lauded his boys for the comeback and consequent tonkings of the JSS3.
Similarly, the JSS3 coaches, Mr Etuge Solomon and the only female coach, Mrs Lina Harekari showered encomiums on their team for their efforts in getting to the finals and giving their best.
Addressing students and staff after the matches, the Principal of the school, Mr Emmanuel Fori, expressed joy for the successful fun filled 2017/2018 Director’s Cup.He thanked the students for their bluckbuster performance in the cup, adding that the avalanche of sporting skills they displayed in the course of the competition, speaks
volume of the fact that Ruby Springfield College is not only renowned for academics but also sports. He however reminded them that exam is around the corner and charged them to study hard. His words:
“I am really happy for this competition. Both students and staff have been hugely entertained. People say we are excellent in academic performance and inculcation of morals.We agree, as that by God’s grace is true. But we have shown and will keep showing that our best in all ramifications is yet to come. Here in Ruby, we try to discover students’ talents and help them develop them. I have no iota of doubt that in few years to come students from this citadel of learning will be renowned creative writers, athletes and footballers, among others, as they are being properly schooled in various fields – all thanks to the Director of this noble school, Mrs J O. Ofuani, for her outstanding initiative and progressive mindedness. “
Furthering, the certified Engineer who doubles as educationist and administrator, Mr Fori thanked the staff for their contributions which made the competition a huge success
In a brief chat with the energetic and proactive school Game Master, Mr Emmanuel Olufo, he expressed gratitude to the students and the entire members of staff for their contributions in ensuring that the competition was a success and described the competition as entertaining and thrilling.
The highlights of the event were a kick-off by the Vice Principal, Mr Asah Augustine, lifting of cups by the winners, giving out gifts to some players who distinguished themselves in various ways ,group photographs and light refreshments.
It will be recalled that the Director’s Cup is an annual event in the institution.
