Lt. General Buratai is not yet due for retirement–presidency

The Chief of Army Staff,Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai is not yet due for retirement and he is not among those who have benefited from tenure elongation by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,Muhammadu Buhari.

It could be recalled that a vocal minority of some Nigerians have been spreading rumors about his attainment of retirement age and therefore immediate and quick replacement as Army Chief but it were the Chiefs of Airstaff and Naval staff that had already attained the age of retirement and ought to have been pulled out. However the President felt that it was important to retain them because of the present security challenges Nigeria is being confronted with.

The presidency has finally put this matter to rest .According to the presidency,Lt. General is a member of Course 29, and therefore is not due for retirement and as such does not even need any any tenure elongation for now.

“In the case of Gen. Buratai, he was a member of Course 29 in the Nigerian Army, meaning that he has not attained the retirement age or maximum length of service yet.”

According to our source, “Mr. President’s decision to extend their tenure was strategic because he believed that Gen. Olonisakin, as the head of the Armed Forces, could not be retired in the middle of the war against Boko Haram.

“So, Mr. President decided to extend not only Gen. Olonisakin’s tenure, but that of the Chiefs of Air and Naval Staff by one year.

“In the case of Gen. Buratai, he was a member of Course 29 in the Nigerian Army, meaning that he has not attained the retirement age or maximum length of service yet.”

A senior security consultant based in Maiduguri said that this clarification is a welcome development as it will make the naysayers and those who don’t want the Army Chief to retrace their steps and go back into hiding.”I can tell you that there is a calculated attempt since last year to manipulate, coax, deceive and even threaten the presidency to sack the Army Chief but President Buhari being a detrabilized and patriotic Nigerian refused to listen to them or entertain their unscrupulous sentiments. The Army Chief is doing very well although it is a collective effort of his team, yet he is the leader.I think his ability to lead his men from the forefront is also commendable but most especially his incorruptibility and transparency was what made the President to appoint him as COAS,” said Barrister Mohammed Sani.

However a medical doctor in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital who doesn’t want his name to be mentioned said that Lt. General as well as the Chief of Airstaff ought to be retired because they have lost steam. “Let me tell you this; soldiers are dying everyday. Many of them don’t even have the required arms or equipment to work and as a result Boko Haram terrorists are now defeating them every now and then.”

Just like the President many people and stakeholders from the northeastern region of the country received this news with great joy, and many of them have expressed their commitment to collaborate with the military to end terrorism in the region.
